Off-Book, and Theater Etiquette
It's off-book time!
Actors will no longer be allowed to have their scripts up on stage, once we have gotten through blocking the show. (Anything we haven't blocked yet, you're still OK.) You may call for Line, and someone will give you your line.
Blocking means where you're standing and moving on the stage. Blocking a show means putting the actors on the stage and having them move where they're supposed to move.
CALLING FOR YOUR LINE:
If you don't remember your line, say "Line" loudly & clearly. There's no need to tell me why you don't remember your line, or to give me a reason why you haven't memorized your line. Calling line is part of the process of memorizing your lines.
THEATER ETIQUETTE
* Please don't tell other people what their lines are. The actor's job is to know THEIR OWN lines and blocking. It is not the actor's job to tell other people what they're supposed to be doing, or what they're supposed to say, unless the actor specifically asks another actor to remind them. That is the director or choreographer's job. This is a theater rule for people of all ages, so it's good to learn it early! It's VERY looked down upon.
* Please don't offer your directing or choreography suggestions during rehearsal, unless the director or choreographer asks for your opinion. Yes, your ideas might be very good, but it's the director's job to come up with that, and it's the actor's job to listen and then do what is needed. Offering your suggestion often interrupts the flow of the director or choreographer's thoughts, and takes important time away from rehearsal. It makes the director or choreographer stop what they are doing with the whole group so that they can listen to your suggestion. If you have a suggestion, the best time to bring it up is BEFORE or AFTER rehearsal. We'd be MORE than happy to listen to your thoughts than when we're not dealing with all the other people in the room.
* If you have a question, PLEASE make sure it's relevant to what we're doing in the moment. If you stop rehearsal with your personal story, or a question that isn't relevant to what we're doing, you're stopping rehearsal for all the other people there. If you'd like to share a story or an idea or have a specific question, please ask before or after rehearsal, or in an email. I'm happy to listen! I just have to be able to focus on what I'm doing without interruption.
